The Royal Garden Champs-Elysées
A 4 stars hotel of charm nearby the Arc de Triomphe

The Arc de Triomphe

The construction of the Arc was decided by Napoléon 1st in order to dominate the prospect of the Avenue of the Champs Elysées. The Arc de Triomphe is a Roman invention. The first Roman arcs were located at the entries of the cities. The Roman soldiers who returned in their cities after a military campaign had to deposit their weapons and to pass under the arc. By doing this, they were symbolically reinstated as a normal citizen. The Arc de Triomphe, which was at the start a tool of pacification and social cohesion, became a mean to glorify victories of armies. For this reason Napoléon build this arc. The construction of the Arc de Triomphe lasted 30 years, from 1805 to 1835.

The Park Monceau

In 1769, the duke of Chartres bought a land of 1 hectare next to the street of Courcelles. Between 1773 and 1778, he managed to gather a field of 12 hectares after successive purchases. Carmontelle, the designer, set up different points of view and a river. There are evocations of small constructions representing false vestiges of the temple of Mars, a minaret, a Dutch windmill, a naumachie in the oval basin and an Egyptian pyramid ! The Parisian called this place "the madness of Chartres". In 1793 during the French revolution, the park became an English garden with grass and trees.
